Jolene & Samantha Stahn
Jolene started in 4-H in 2003, at 10 years old, with a solid
Galloway steer. After expenses she had enough money to
buy her first belted Galloway heifer, Nevaeh. Jolene took
Nevaeh to the fair as a yearling heifer in 2004.
Samantha started 4-H in 2005 when she was 10 years old
with a yearling Belted Galloway heifer, Puzzle, which she
bought with her savings.
Jolene takes a Galloway steer and a belted Galloway
heifer to the Emo fair every year for 4-H, Samantha takes a
Belted Galloway heifer every year, a Galloway steer, and in
2006 she bought a registered Jersey heifer, Jenny, to train
and show. In 2009 Samantha took Unique, a beltie/jersey
cross heifer to the fair, then in December, Sam led Unique
in Emo's Holly Daze parade for Christmas.
Jolene and Samantha enjoy working with and training the
animals for the 4-H shows, and have found the Galloways are
very quiet and enjoy the attention. Their herd of cattle
consists of retired 4-H heifers, and have found a niche
market in trained heifers, (steers go to the freezer). The
girls have encouraged their friends to join 4-H and let them
use Galloway heifers for their project animals. The kids
spend the summer training, washing, grooming, then showing
Galloway and belted Galloway heifers, steers, and cow/calf
pairs at the Emo fair.

The
CGA received the following letter from Wyatt Horvey
My heifer, Dun Gal Blackberry, and I have had a good year.
She placed second in the heifer class in my 4-H club show.
Then during the summer, my uncle Russel, myself, and
Blackberry spent a week at the Calgary Stampede in July.
There was no show, but we had a Galloway exhibit set up and
my heifer was on display there. She behaved really
well, and people liked to come look at her. We had a
lot of fun at Calgary, and took in the Stampede and
Chuckwagon Races. I also took Blackberry to Farmfair
International in Edmonton in November. She won the
yearling heifer class there. I am still using
Blackberry as one of my 4-H projects this year, and will
take her and her calf to show as a two year old with calf at
foot for my achievement day in May.

The
following letter from Stuart McIlwraith was received
by the CGA
Hi, my name is Stuart McIlwraith. Glenfiddich Unified
was my fourth 4-H Beef Project. I showed her at 6 fall
fairs in the 4-H classes. My first 4-H show in
Beamsville, we won Grand Champion Breeding Heifer and Grand
Champion Showmanship. This year Kubota Canada gave all
Ontario 4-H champions leather coats. From this show, I
now have a new coat. At my achievement day, I won
Reserve Grand Champion Breeding Heifer and Reserve Champion
Showmanship. A team from my 4-H club went to the Royal
Agricultural Winter Fair for the 4-H Junior Heifer Show.
Due to the fact that there are very few Galloways in the
show (four this year), we showed in an all other breeds
class. Unified won Reserve Champion Heifer All Other
Breeds.
I plan one day to continue on with family tradition and
raise Galloway cattle. I want to thank Glenfiddich for
always having a heifer for me to show, my uncle and Grampa
for helping me with training and clipping, Don Marsh and
Glenfiddich for sponsoring me to go to the Royal and the
Canadian Galloway Association for rewarding me after I
complete my project.
